It is very likely that at some point in your life, you or someone you know will suffer from hip pain and be faced with hip surgery. In some cases, this may be arthroscopic surgery, and in many cases, this may be a full hip replacement. Returning to normal function after any surgery will require rehabilitation. Here is what is involved with post-surgery rehabilitation.
Goals of Post-Surgery Rehabilitation
The goal of post-surgery rehabilitation is to improve your overall mobility function, manage possible pain and help you to begin moving as quickly as possible to avoid complications related to being immobilized. Your hip function is affected by a combination of hip range of motion, and strength. Your physiotherapist will look to address both of these areas with specific, targetted exercises designed especially for you. Our goal is to help you maximize your strength, aid you to walk without a limp and help you to resume your normal activities as soon as possible.
Initial Visit During your initial visit to Advanced Physiotherapy, we will complete a comprehensive evaluation and assessment. This aids us in determining your current pain level and function. We will measure your current flexibility and strength, learn about your pain levels and explore your medical history.
Treatment Plan After your first visit, we will create a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the needs of you and your hip. This plan will focus on the results of your initial evaluation. During your course of treatment, your physiotherapist will assist you and walk you through exercises that are designed to address strength and range of motion issues. In addition to your scheduled physiotherapy sessions, there will also be prescribed exercises for you to follow at home. Active participation is vital for quick and effective healing, so make sure you work with your physiotherapist and follow your prescribed program as best you can.
Rest assured, hip surgeries are common and physiotherapy has proven to help individuals regain mobility and control. Your hip replacement surgery is simply the start of the journey to recovery. Our physiotherapy team is passionate about active post-surgery rehabilitation and we look forward to working with you.
